About Wales Deaf Rugby Union

Wales Deaf Rugby Union is a volunteer-led, self-funded registered charity supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing people to access, enjoy and excel in rugby.

Founded in 1996, the organisation exists to create opportunity, belonging and progression through the game, from community participation through to international representation. Our work combines inclusive grassroots development with elite performance, helping players grow in confidence, connection and ambition while representing Wales with pride.

Who we are

 

WDRU is built by a committed group of volunteers who give their time, experience and energy across governance, coaching, administration, communications and player support. As an independent charity, we rely on people who believe in the value of deaf rugby in Wales and want to help create a stronger, more sustainable future for it.

We are proud of our history and equally focused on what comes next. Alongside our international ambitions, we are working to strengthen our community pathway so that more deaf and hard-of-hearing children and young people can find a place in rugby from an early age.

Our purpose

 

Our purpose is to create an environment where deaf and hard-of-hearing players feel supported, understood and able to thrive.

That means providing opportunities at different stages of the journey, from early community engagement and youth development through to high-performance preparation and international competition. It also means building an organisation that is well run, welcoming and sustainable for the long term.

Community and performance

 

Our work is not limited to the international stage. WDRU is developing a stronger community focus, with current work centred on creating opportunities for children and young people aged U6 to U16.

This matters because representation starts long before selection. By building confidence, connection and access at community level, we can help more young people and families feel part of the game and part of a wider support network.

At the same time, WDRU continues to support elite deaf rugby in Wales, including preparation for major international competition such as the 2026 World Championships in Japan.

Our history

 

The roots of Wales Deaf Rugby go back to 1995, when players connected through Swansea Deaf Club and Newport Deaf Club began organising deaf rugby activity in South Wales. Swansea Deaf Rugby Club and Pill Harriers Deaf Rugby Club played the first matches between the two groups, helping build momentum and interest within the deaf community.

As the game developed, both clubs agreed to establish a formal Wales committee structure in October 1996 to strengthen deaf rugby, support development and raise awareness. From that foundation, Wales Deaf Rugby Football Club was formed, with a constitution, membership structure and charitable status helping the organisation grow its reach and fundraising capacity.

An early milestone came in 1998, when Wales Deaf hosted New Zealand Deaf Rugby Union on tour. It was a significant moment for deaf rugby in Wales and helped establish the organisation’s place within the international game.
