WALES DEAF RUGBY UNVEIL DENNIS GETHIN AS NEW PRESIDENT

Dennis Gethin, current President of the Wales Rugby Union has been unveiled as the new President of Wales Deaf Rugby.

Mr Gethin, who became Welsh Rugby Union President in 2007, was formerly the Secretary of the Welsh Rugby Union for five years from March 1998 to December 2002.

He became a Welsh Secondary Schools International in 1963 and won two rugby Blues at Cambridge in 1965 and 1966. He played his club rugby as a fullback for Seven Sisters, Swansea, Neath, Cardiff and Glamorgan Wanderers.

He assumes the Presidency as Wales Deaf begin preparations for their forthcoming match against new development region Rygbi Gogledd Cymru in Colwyn Bay on 6 November.

Speaking at the WRU’s National Centre of Excellence, Mr Gethin said: “I feel very proud and privileged to be appointed president of the Wales Deaf Rugby, the current Deaf Rugby World Champions.

“It’s a particular delight to follow in the footsteps of Keith Rowlands, the former president of the Welsh Rugby Union and Wales Deaf Rugby who did so much to promote deaf rugby throughout Wales and beyond.”

Wales Deaf Rugby Chair Claire Thomas said: “We are honoured and delighted to welcome Dennis as our new President.  His status as a leading figure in not only Welsh, but world rugby, will help raise the profile of deaf rugby and build upon on our recent recruitment campaign for new players.”
